I was wondering why they used such a hard gear ratio in the rear and trans of my B2200 1991 it makes for hella torque for such a small motor but damn your in and outa gears in a flash with a seriously cut top speed. I mean I'm at close to 4000 rpm's at 70 miles an hour.

anybody know why they didn't stretch it any?

First thing you need to know is, when these trucks were built, the national speed limit was 55 mph. Also, they were built as workhorses, not racecars.

These gear ratios were used to make towing and hauling easier with a small efficient motor. Also 4000rpm at 70, something is wrong. I do 80 around 3600 with 1200lbs in tow with mine and its a blue smoke bandit.

thanks guys that's good to hear because I want to use this truck to haul stuff for side work so it great to hear it should be able to handle it. I will have to check to see how much I was exaggerating about 4000 at 70mph but I know im over 3 at seventy ill check it out today. I think I may be having some timing issues causing me to loose some power I posted a thread to get some advise on my timing issue.

I did the 5th gear swap from an RX7 about 6 or 7 years ago and couldn't be happier with it. 2500rpm at 70mph.

whats the 5th gear swap? just swapping out the #5 gear and nothing else?

Yes, These are two RX7 trannies. I ended up using the one on the left with the big weight on the tail shaft because the right one had a very close ratio to the B... But this will help you see the exposed gear on the right is the 5th gear. center and tail shaft housing were removed to get to it and swap it out. This is the only pic I have left from when I did it. I will scrounge around to find another post I made somewhere that has the gear ratios for different year RX7s.
