I need opinions on tire repair. Are these tires safe to use if I repair by plugging? Tire store - who's purpose is primarily to sell new tires, understand - says not safe to repair, maybe because they'd rather sell new tires, maybe because of legal liability, or maybe they are 100% correct.

So who here can look at these two photos of two different tires and provide their opinion ??? Thanks.

Sidewall damage is non repairable, and that 2nd pic is right on the edge of where the sidewall and tread meet, so I would say its not repairable, most shops would probably not repair it (liability in case it does fail). The first one should be OK to repair, but looks like the tire is worn right out anyway and needs replacement. Wouldn't be worth it to mount the tire on a rim if its a loose tire.

I agree with what has been said with the addition that the flex in the sidewall is going to make any repair on tire number two extra dangerous if it blows.

Update:

Tire #1 is still on my B2200, only difference is that since Saturday the head of the roofing nail has been worn away. I will check to see if I have any Road Hazard coverage on that tire, believe I bought that to replace a blowout on the road on the highway while traveling to my place up north. I may plug that, or just leave it alone if it doesn't leak.

Tire #2 is now in my side yard. I took two of the 235/75R15 tires on Mazda 4x4 wheels that were given to me, and bolted two of those onto daughter's Pathfinder rear drums, same size as those that were on there. Her rear driver side one then became the "new" spare, as the previous spare was 10 years old, so old spare also went to side yard for time being. Her front tires are significantly newer. Daughter's 1998 Pathfinder had the two rears on it when she bought it Aug. 2012, so she's put 20K more onto those, so their lifetime was not much longer. So she now has four practically-new tires plus a better spare, and I was a good dad. True: the wheels in the front do not match the wheels in the rear, but she doesn't care. Whenever she needs new tires for the rear, she could just have thoase mounted on the original Pathfinder wheels so everything would match. So her Pathfinder is now "part Mazda truck" !!! Unfortunately, those four Mazda 4x4 wheels only came with one Mazda hubcap center, so didn't put that on.
The hubcap looks like bottom one in this photo, if anybody has a loose one lying around.
