Here's the scoop.

Truck has 134,000 km on it, one owner truck, EFI, automatic. It has been great to me so far except for a few small issues here and there. When it's -20 degrees outside the truck starts perfectly plugged in or not. Even the other day when it was -35 Celsius outside it started no issues. Now in the past week the weather has been warming up causing everything to be sloppy and wet on the roads. Today I go to start my truck, it is a paltry +2 degrees outside, snow is melting everywhere etc. etc.

Truck won't start. Will crank and crank and crank, maybe occasionally "popping" or sounding like it's firing on a cylinder or two. It did this once before when the weather was similar (ie: right at the freezing/melting point). Last time I just let it sit all weekend and it started no problem the following Monday when it was -20 or so outside.

Why does it do this? I'm assuming it is just moisture getting somewhere it shouldn't... I quickly popped the distributor cap and it seemed dry and fine in there. And I can also smell fuel from the exhaust when I'm cranking.. I didn't really have a lot of time to troubleshoot this morning before work so I just ended up taking my Toyota in today. But I'm kind of getting stressed out about the truck not starting and I can't be driving my Toyota very often because it's got bald all-seasons on it and it's kind of scary to drive on a slippery road.

Has anyone had this issue before? How did you rectify it? Is it a common issue with these trucks?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Derek.

Maybe your coolant temperature switch or the plug has gone flaky. I think it is located behind the timing cover near the thermostat. It's visible from the outside.

Have you tried to crank the motor with the throttle at the floor?
