I am weighing heavily the idea of replacing my sealed beam headlights on my 1990 B2200 xtrcab.
The HID Bi-Xenon mod kit is bout $80 on ebay (.

A similar H4 bulb kit is about $65. This kit comes with the lenses, bulbs, and high-temp wiring harnesses to keep the factory wiring from melting.

My fear is overloading the charging system. Anyone have any experience with this that can offer some direction?

HID's when they first fire up draw a bit of current not sure on the exact number, but once they warm up they draw less than sealed beam bulbs. The only drawback is you NEED to aim them properly so you do not blind oncoming motorist. Search for Autopal H4 conversion headlamps on ebay. They look just like the Hella lenses at half the cost and look waaay better than some of the lenses there.

I've heard some people who bought the B2200 kit off ebay said that parts of the housing (or glue that was holding parts of it together) melted from the high temps - basically the housing was cheap and not designed for the higher heat that's dissipated from the HID's. I was looking at that exact same kit, until I'd read a few others who'd had the 'melting' issue. I ended up buying Silvania Silverstar sealed beams, and the light output is easily double the stock headlights. Certainly not quite to HID's output, but way better than stock.

I've seen the "Vision X" housings used on a few of my freinds' third gen 'Yota wheelers, and they used HIDs in them, no problems yet, and going on a couple years of use and night wheeling trips. IIRC the housings were 80 some odd bucks CAD.

A lot of the the ebay cheap H4 conversion lenses are junk. I think they just use hot glue to seal the two halves together. The Autopals were the closest to the Hellas in quality at half the price.

HIDs also come with different wattage ballast usually 35w and 55w. The bulbs can handle up to 60w. The 60 watt setup does give off a lot of heat and will melt or cause problems with housings.

I would recommend using the 35w kit. Get a high low kit if you live in rual areas or want high beams.
