Hi Kalerido,
The first thing I would do is remove the console, shifter boot cover, shifter lever. Make sure the three bolts holding it to the transmission are not loose. The next step is to remove it and check it. It should have a white plastic ball on the end of the shift lever. Check the inside of the tranny for broken pieces. Next, use a extension for a rachet as a shift lever and see what happens.
There should be an engine code on the label on your firewall or on top of the grille. The engine code is also stamped on the passenger side of the engine, or use the following list to determine which four-cylinder engine you have:
g63b 2.0 liter, plastic timing belt covers, paired ports and carburetor, 83-89
g54b 2.6 liter, metal timing chain cover, evenly spaced ports and carburetor, through 90
4g64 2.4 liter, plastic timing chain covers, paired ports, fuel injected, 91 on
4d55 2.3 liter diesel with turbo through 85
The 91 and 94 trucks have only one 4-clyinder engine choice: the 4g64 2.4 liter engine.
Your main concern about swapping transmissions should be whether both engines and transmissions are narrow-blocks or wide-blocks. The following link lists the various engines block widths and whether they are 6- or 7-bolt engines:
The following link documents how to measure the difference between a narrow- and wide-block engines:
All pickups use the same KM132 5-speed transmissions. It should not matter if one engine is a 6-bolt and the other is a 7-bolt as long as they are the same block widths.
