1988 D-50 2.0L G63B Manual Transmission.....The subject pretty much sums it up. Other night was driving at a slower (about 20mph) speed and started hearing a tick (like valves) from rear of engine. then it just died and would not restart. towed home to discover engine locked up. I pulled timing cover and found the balance shaft belt broken and tangled up. Removed it and tried to turn by hand and it made about 3/4 of a turn and would not go any further. I then pulled the camshaft so I could "reset" everything but crankshaft still will not turn. Any ideas on how to get around this or am I looking at a bigger nightmare.

i think it might be possible that a balance shaft is hitting something? because it has to be in time with the crank. im not possitive that it would interfere with eachother though. just throwing an idea at you. i think i remember reading that the 2.0 is a non interferance motor as in the valves wont hit the pistons if the belt breaks. but i know that some mitsu motors do bend valves when the belt breaks.

slow50; i've had the same problem. All the belts are fine, cam still won't turn. Working on removing the engine now =/
