91 MM - no power to fuel pump

I bought the truck for $75 and the mechanic told me it needed a fuel pump. I dumped fuel in all the cylinders and it fired right up, so it did seem like the fuel pump, I never thought to check the wiring.

I changed the fuel pump and nothing. Tested the ohms on the old fuel pump, and it had a reading, so it was still good. I stripped a bit off the wires about 4 inches down the pump connection and tested them with the key on, and got 0 volts. I tried to take a jumper cable and touch the hot wire to see if I could get the pump to run, and it did nothing.

Any suggestions on what I can do, or what might be the problem? Searched the manual for any relays or fuses that might have anything to do with the fuel pump, could find none.

Help please, thanks.

Not sure on your 4g64 but on my 4g63t that I put in my truck the main relay(big gold relay under pass kick panel) also controls the fuel pump. Believe its the same for your tuck, might want to check that out

That's correct; however that relay also powers the starter so if it fires up doubtful its the relay. Maybe a break in the electric line from the relay to the pump.

Starter works just fine, I'll test the wiring by the relay and see if I have power. I hope it isn't a break in the wiring, I don't want to pull everything apart looking....

You may want to also check the molex connector that is on top of the fuel tank plugged into the pump from the outside. If that is messed up may be your culprit. My fuel gauge won't work until I replace the connector because my idiot friend dropped his end of the fuel tank when we were lowering it and shattered the connector =/. Had to lower it ghetto style with us supporting each side of the tank on the jack.

I don't want to have to drop the tank to look at that connector, so I hope the relay is the problem!! I tested the connector going into the relay, and with the key on, only 2 black wires had power. One had a yellow stripe, can't remember the color of the strip on the other. Anyone know if thats right?

If you take off the rear left wheel and cowl you should be able to see the top of the gas tank very clearly. It is tiny, in my opinion just has 4 mounting bolts 2 on each side not even a strap (at least my 94 doesn't, lol)

Can probably see it better if you jack the back up a bit too.

As far as the wires I can look it up when I get home don't know offhand.

I can't figure this thing out. I have now replaced the fuel pump and sending unit and still nothing. I have taken alligator clips hooked to a charger and touched the end of the connection, nothing. Tested the connectors for power, nothing. No matter what I do or test, I don't see power or get the fuel pump to run at all.

What am I doing wrong??? I have never had this much problem with something that should be fairly simple.

Wasn't there just a similar post about his problem? Seems like there is a relay on or near the ecu that controls the starter and fuel pump. I might be wrong but this sounds familiar.

Actually, here is where I read it:
