compression fittings leak proof ?

Are brass compression fittings used with standard air line leak proof when connected together? Im just talking about the part with the compression itself disregarding the fact that leaks can occur from the fitting to other objects (bags, valves) Brass push to connect seem to have a higher chance of leaks and are harder to get good tight fit.
