Witness takes the stand
A man who claimed to know three murder suspects began his testimony in Fresno County Superior Court on Wednesday.
The witness, Ramiro Roman Jr., told a jury that a stolen truck pulled up to his home shortly after midnight on March 22, 2002.
The truck belonged to D.J. Hunter, 19, who was killed that day and his body burned inside the vehicle.
Roman, who appeared uneasy on the witness stand and mumbled many of his answers, said he was friends with Alfred Cruz. He was with Cruz, 19, the day the truck arrived at his home.
Cruz is charged, along with Martin Castro, 18; and Jose David Romero, 19, with murdering Hunter. The three defendants were juveniles when Hunter was shot three times in the head. If found guilty of murder and robbery, they could be sentenced to life in prison.
Roman has pleaded to robbery charges in exchange for his testimony.
Roman said the truck was driven to his house by Jesus Lopez, who also is charged with murdering Hunter. Lopez, 29, is scheduled be tried separately along with Daniel Justin Ortego, 25; and Stacey Daniella Dyer, 23.
The three older murder defendants could be executed if convicted, but the District Attorney's Office has not decided whether it will seek the death penalty in that case.
Roman is scheduled to continue his testimony today.
