smoothing dash and plastic pieces

i'm getting ready to start smoothing all my plastic pieces and sooner or later my dash. What grit sandpaper do i need to buy and what other supplies do i need. did most of you guys use a sander or just by hand, if a sander what kind? thanks in advance guys
