I am needing some info or possibly some parts on this one guys. I'm needing another hoghead/3rd member setup or some help finding parts for mine. Does anyone know if the differential from a 4wd rear would work with the 2wd. I am assuming the only difference would be the gearing and the same size. 7 3/4 and ????? Mine has the 2 notches at 12 and 6 o'clock.

is yours a 4cyl or a v-6. count the webs on the casting.

I figured it all out. I used the hoghead from my 4wd. I knew there was a difference between some of the rearends. So I found a couple of chaps from the 4wd forums to help me out.

I went from 4spd with 3.88 and limited slip to 5spd, 4.10 gearing and posi.

are the 3.88 gears the stock gears in a 4 speed setup? i just put a 5 speed in my toyota but left the 4 speed rearend in it and it absolutly killed my acceleration and top end. minus the posi are the 4.10 gears the stock size for a 5 speed tranny?

Yup, 3.88 were the stock for the 4spd and the 4.10 posi came from my 4wd 5spd truck.

My uncle said the 4.10's would be too much for the truck. I told him about all the people that have done the 4 to 5spd swap and all of them seem to claim that they lost a lot of low end pull. I think it will be fine setup and shoulldn't hurt me too much on top end unlike the 4spd's ability of beign 75mph max.

Here is some info on how to decipher and recognise some of the toyota rearends and gearing.

I knew I was in for a something when I opened the drain plug and this is all that came out. Axle oil smells bad the way it is but when its burnt........its a horrid smell.

yeah it did loose a lot of low end. but i was worried about the 4wd rearend making it even lower than it already is. i would think that if your running 4.10 gears in the rear end with a 5 speed tranny that it would make the acceleration worse than if i were to just keep the 4 speed rear end with the 3.88 gears. or am i looking at this wrong? my understanding of the 4wd tranny is that the gearing in it is lower to turn bigger gears in the rearend and the transfer case. or are the rearend gears between the 5 speed 4wd and 5 spd. two wheel drive the same?

you want the 4.10's. It will help with the loss of low end. the 4wd 5sp has a lower ratio for 1st gear then the 2wd 5sp. At least it did in my '90.. The best rearend I have ever used in a toyota pickup with a 5sp is from a early rwd celica with a solid axle.

so if the 4wd rearend has 4.10 gears what would it do as far are driving on the freeway? right now i can get 70 out of my truck. 80 for a lil bit but the motor is spinning faster than it did with the 4 speed in it. it gets really close to redline...
