do you pay to go to church?

I'm doing my home work for my religions class.

while in the scientology website I found this...."Some churches have a system of tithes, others require their members to pay for pew rentals, religious ceremonies and services."

I said..."What the HELL?!?!?!?!?!?" paying for a pew or services....what is the world coming to?
