relay

i recently bagged the front of my toyota, i have the power wire for the compressor running directly from the battery through a toggle switch to the p switch, to the compressor. a few people have told me i need to run a relay. my question is, what else do i need, and how exactly do i wire this? i already have an inline fuse for the compressor. thanks in advance
