shaving bd line?

hey thanks for all the help you guys give, but heres the question, im new to body work and of course i always pic hard projects to lern on but im shaving the bd. line on my s-10 (1st gen) im using 20gauge steel and welding them in, my question is how do you get the curve of the body with the filler? my work looks flat.
