E-bay Bidding Help

Everytime I place a bid on an item it tells me that someone has already bid higher than me by $0.50 even though I placed a bid higher then the current bid.

Can anyone help me out, I am kinda new to buying stuff from there and it is starting to piss me off that the price keeps going up right after I bid.
