Getting a 4WD to lay out.

G'day.
I'm in Australia, and I want to bag and lay a 4WD out. But I don't know what's involved in it. I've been told that the 4WD running gear needs to be gotten rid of... So, how easy is it to drop a 4WD body, on a 2WD chassis?
I'm thinking something along the lines of a Jeep Cherokee, maybe 83, or 93... Not sure. Either way... Can anyone give me information on what's involved, and a rough estimate in AUS$$? Or, direct me to somewhere I could find such information?
