How much damage can be done from the tranny being low on fluid for maybe a month and a half? Heres the story.

About a month and a half ago I started hearing a noise everytime the truck shifted. The noise itself is hard to explain but it was right before the truck shifted. I dropped it off at a shop and asked them to check everything out for me, oil, tranny, rearend, everything. Well I picked up the truck later that day and they said everything checked out fine and they thought the noise was just a vibration. Well today since I had time I checked the oil and it was fine. Since I had the truck running still I checked the tranny fluid and you could barely see just a little bit on the end of the dip stick, maybe an 1/8th inch up the dip stick. Well I added a quart and a half to get it back to where it needed to be and went for a drive. The end result was that it shifted 10 times better then before and the noise was gone. Now I figure that it wasn't that low for the entire month and a half but thats around the time I started hearing the noise. I figure the noise must have been something grinding inside, but I hope not. The only reason why I'm streesing about this so much is because I bought the tranny brand new from GM in December and don't want to have to replace it already. So how much damage could have been done? On the drive I went for it didn't seem like anything was wrong, no stange noises or weird shifting, truck ran perfect. Just wondering if I should expect something bad to happen soon or if they can run low for a little while before they start to eat themselves up inside.

Sorry for the overly long post and thanks in advance.
