Motor/Tranny issue? 94 accord

EX - stock (I know, stock sucks.....this is our DD) with an auto.
128k miles. Extremely well maintained. New plugs and wires 2000 miles ago. Ran a bottle of injector cleaner through with some super gas - this made NO difference on the problem described below.
I'm experiencing a 'shutter' between 2000 and 2700 rpm. And ONLY in those ranges. It feels like a fuel filter is bad, the motor just kinda cuts out for a brief moment.
But here's the kicker - if the car is cold, it WILL NOT do this. If I try to powerbrake the car to that RPM range, nothing happens, no shaking or cutting out. If I toss the car in neutral and rev the motor - it does not do this.
I'm out of ideas. I think it may be somewhere in the tranny, but who knows?
Any ideas? This is driving me insane!
