Shaving 01 Chevy Stepside Tail lights.

How would you go about or did you shave the tail lights on a plastic bedside without it cracking after it's driven a little. A friend of mine is wanting to shave his tail lights and he's got a stepside bed and it's plastic so I have no idea how to go about it. So if ya will post whatcha know on the topic. Thanks.
