Need info about older Bugs

Hello, My wife and I have been talking and are wanting to get an older bug, not exactly sure of what year or type(definatly not a Super Beetle) What are some things to look for when purchasing a bug? what are some of the negatives? What is the cheapest way to lower it? I have been reading and have noticed alot of different ways. Some people using lowered spindles, something called an adjustable front beam. We don't want air or juice. My questions are mostly about the suspension being I can do most of the other custom work myself.
