taillight problems

my parking lights work, when i hit the brake, the right side lights up and the left side goes out completely. obviously this sounds like a short in the wire, but i cant seem to find anything wrong with the wires, could this be anything else? i check the bulb already. It was like this when i bought it by the way, its an 1983 toyota 4x4. thanks for the help.
