Starting Jan.1, 2005, stranded vehicles will be towed from the city's freeways within 6 min. The new program states that you will no longer be allowed to change a flat tire on the freeway shoulder, walk to the nearest gas station, or call for your own assistance. The city has entered into contracts with towing companies to respond to all disabled vehicles within 6 min., and promptly remove the vehicle off the freeway, once authorized by a police officer at Houston's TranStar center. The driver will be able to state where they want the vehicle to be towed, within 30 miles. The charge will be $75.00 for the first 5 miles, and $1.50 for each additional mile thereafter. The one thing that come to my mind is, what about all of the pot holes, and debris that are on the freeways that can cause a blow-out. Who will be responsible for that? My recommendation is to insure you are looking far enough in front of your vehicle to identify all hazards and avoid them. Also, perform regular maintenance on your vehicle to minimize the possibility of an unexpected break-down.
