Lost title...

ok guys, this one is not going to be as simple as going down to city hall and applying for a duplicate title. i bought a 1980 dodge d50 from a "friend" and he kept dicking me around on the title. OK, well, he finally gave me the title, but the truck was in his brothers name (i talked to the brother, was a legit deal) so we were going to have to work out a time and date to go get it transferred and it just slipped my mind until tonight. i was trying to find out what size motor is in it and someone said to give them the VIN and they would help me figure it out. ok, so i went to find the title AND ITS GONE!! mom has either misplaced it or one of my nieces or nephews put it in the garbage months ago.....is there ANY way i can get a title for this thing? basically, what this comes down to, is the truck wasn't in my name yet, and i have misplaced or lost the title........i dont wanna junk it if i don't have to.....please someone help......
