rear axle leaking

i have a 2001 ranger and on the drivers side of the rear axle there is a little thing that sticks out of the axle,about 1/2 inch tall thick as a pencil,and all my gear fluid is leaking out of it really bad,wich is making my gears grind.does anyone know what that thing is?
