Do you need to have a grill shell to install a phantom grill on an 88? Or do you just bolt it up and recess the head lights? Thanks for the help

just bolt it in and recess the head lights....i had a problem with my driver side head light being recessed enough (my truck was totalled at one time and that side took the impact) so i shaved the inside of the grille down to clear the head light. cant tell any difference on the outside. and it all lines up perfect.
