how to do graphix

I hate to take trade secrets, but I am a self taught photoshopper. I just can't figure out how you guys do the graphix such as flames, scallops, tribals,.... I have been trying, do you guys hand draw them or do you import them. I am just curious, I am not looking to make money off of choppin....it is a good way for me to spend my time.
