i know some people use 110 welders for sheet metal work and what not. i personally have a 220 (lincoln 175 hd) that i can turn all the way down to weld sheet metal but sometimes if your not careful it will burn right through. look at the other things you would like to weld as well. other than bodywork do you think you would use it to make brackets, link bars, or weld anything thicker than sheetmetal? you can do some of that stuff just fine with a 110 but its only going to penetrate so much. when i bought mine, i knew i was going to want to learn how to weld good and find another junker that i could fix up myself so thats why i got it...
shaving stuff off isnt too hard its more time consuming than anything. get your materials from a autobody place and ask them for some advice or tips when shaving. also, get online and do a search on 'how to'. when i was learning how to paint i had never done it before either...took a lil practice and some reading but in the end it saved a lot of money and it came out just fine.
