Does what a box is made of matter?

A friend of mine built me a box out of MDF (he said) but it is that really tight particle board (Not the plywood kind). Well I was told that it would sound OK but the bass would not travel but you would be able to feel it.

So does the material a box is made of matter if the bass will travel?
