Anyone every try to build new bed rails?

When I bought the truck it had a plastic tool box in the bed but all the rest of the exposed rails were beat to crap. I dont think there is any way that I can fix them with my limited experience. What I think I might try is shape new steel over the small good section of bed and cut the bad sections out. Has anyone else ever done anything like this? Getting a new bed is out of the question because I have looked and cant find one in my area.
