20 inches.

so closer to the cab the higher the lift, or what?

Not in the case of my truck. Basically the further from the axle the more lift. Also makes the bag harder to install.

would i need to gusset the lower bar if its 2x2x 1/4 inch??

No you shouldn't have to. That Mazdas 4-ink came with them, and I didn't like them on there. Its overkill, and when riding low they would potentially drag on something.

ok, im gonna start on making the top bracket to weld onto the side of the frame... then will make lower bars with bracker on there...
i still dont see how it gets more lift then on the axel.. but lol i donno

The closer to the cab the more lift you will get if your bag can handle the extra weight from the leverage. I would put it about in the middle of the bar for good lift and decent ride.

You have to think about the leverage. That Mazda had a 2.5:1 lift ratio. The bag still moves the same amount, 8 inches. However, at the end of the bar, the pivot is moving farther than that because it is farther away from the bag.

My truck is set up with a 1.5:1 ratio, gets around 10-11 inches of lift at like 40 PSI and rides awesome at pretty much any height.
