Ok I have a jl 500/1 amp running my w6v2 and want to install a switch to shut the amp off. Will this hurt the amp or anything by doing this or not I have done it before on other amps but not ones that cost this kinda a money. Before all the haters start talking the reason for wanting it off sometimes is because when my 10 month old son is in the truck his car seat is in front of the sub on the other side of the seat.

Just get a deck with sub control you can turn the subs completely of with the touch of a finger

I have always wired a power switch inline on my remote wire. Just incase something happends. I know some one that fired his truck because his girl drop something and it shorted across the +,-,Gr.

I don't know why they would splice into the other remote wire besides laziness.

It has nothing to do with laziness, when you add a light fixture or ceiling fan, do you pull a new line from your fusebox? Of course not.

The remote turn on line is a very low current 12v signal, why would you run an entirely new line from the head unit and join it to the same wire that is already in the trunk? Meaning, there is only one remote turn on wire on the back of the head unit, it would just be extra wire to run two separate wires from the same point on the back of the radio.

I think you are alos missing the obvious, if your radio has separate sub out RCA,s then it liekly has a sub level control. Instead of turning off a switch (and the amp) just access that sub level on your head unit and turn it all the way down.

You live in Wichita right? I used to install at Advance Audio.

big joe: good call on the relay, but I have only seen one case where the same remote wire wouldnt turn on multiple amps, and that car had 10 sub amps. One wire is fine, no relay needed.

Benny8: most decks have a crossover system that turns on when you select the sub out, he may be able turn the subs off but the bass will likely be pumped through the interior speakers with it turned off.

thats what fuses within 10 inches of the battery are for, a remote line switch would do nothing to protect the amp or the truck. The 12v+ lug is still live, the ground is still ground, and something dropped on those two will short independent of whether the remote wire has power. And be sure and use your fuseholder at the battery, not at the amp.
