what to use to polish gold without ruining it?

i recently purchased a set of 13" wires that have gold spokes. i want to build a early 70's looking lowrider soon. the gold is a little tarnished and lacking in areas. i tried a few metal polishes and it takes the gold right off! i called around and no one seems to know any product. any help?
