Truck loses power while driving?

I have an 89 with a new engine I built. Not even 500 miles on it. When Im drivin it kills the engine, you try pushin gas on and it putters and dies. Also when its stopped at a stop light depending how hot it is running it smokes barely. Whats the deal?
