OK what is the difference between the 2 motors - is it just FI, or does it go deeper. Found a 1985 22R for a good price and I am wondering if it will work in place of my 22-RE in my 1990 4Runner. The 4Runner has a whack of miles on it and has started to tick REALLY badly.

yup, same internals, just fuel injected. Some years are balanced a little differently though. I'm not reall for sure on what years they changed off the top of my head.

Ok thinking here there is a diffrence between the earlier 22re.I used to have a 84 that had a 22re and the block was taller not by much I think it was 1/4 taller.I think the early 22reand 22r were based off of the old 20r.But as far as the newer ones I think 85 and above the 22r and 22re got a new casting, and were shortened down.Lemme see if I can find the website I had that had a cross over that you could find out by your casting number on your block what you had or the motor was orignialy.

When I was researching the difference in model years for my body style truck I found out a few things about the motor. The 22R in the 84 trucks is a motor all its own. Has a lot of different parts, totally different block. And the 81-83 22R was also different from the 84 and was based off the 20R block moreso. Other than that I dont know.
