I finally got the metal to shave my firewall on my 67 c-10 i know how im going to do it and cut the replacement piece. But in doing so im going to cut the original firewall out first. So my question is, will the cab flex or is it pretty secure with it out, or should i brace it first? Only reason im asking is because i have seen some done on this site and many dont have any braceing in the cab, even when its not bolted to the frame. thanks Zef

I always brace the cab before I cut out the firewall.Just use some box or round tube to make an X shape just in front of the doors.

kool thanks a million now to get off this computer and start bracing, then cutting.

It doesn't hurt to brace it but with the floor in and all the wiper cowl and all that still in place I would think you would be alright! But I am not too sure.. I ahve always been told to brace everything...

instead of makin a new thread i fig. i'd jus bring this one back. When you shave your firewall do you have to cut your old one out or can you jus weld over your old one? and if you can do that whats the best way to go about it. thanx

well most people just move shit they want to shave and fill holes on the stock one. i think its best to do it this way unless you plan on building a full floor, tranny tunnel, firewall(probably tubbed,) i mean it justy doesnt make since to cut it out just to make it completely smooth, just make smooth what isnt already'

what gauge metal is best to use and also how do you do it where the hood hinges are and everything?

I shaved the firewall on my 67 c-10, my cab is off the frame with the doors off so of course you should always brace anything unless you want to spend alot of extra time trying to get everything to line up and fit right. I would cut the whole section out instead of putting panels in and filling holes . (I moved my firewall back one inch and built a new tranny tunnel to fit the six speed in) good luck cutting and welding

Like others have said, if your looking to smooth thing out then just fill the holes and gaps. If you want a completely flat firewall then put some bracing in just to be safe and replace the whole thing. And remember to keep your tranny tunnel and floor in mind when cutting out your stock one, you want to keep it clean and straight to you dont have to patch the floor up.

If you just patch your your stock firewall you will have a bunch of bodywork to do. If you replace the whole thing you have to make new holes for you steering column and master cylinders.

if you make a whole new firewall...just cut out your stock steering column hole and brake stuff. They you just patch them in
