Ok, i just put my motor back together and its pinging or something on godly. I set #1 piston to tdc, and the set the distributor to where the rotor pointed at the vacum advance. Is it the timing or possibly the valves need adjusted. I moved the distributor back and forth by the little adjuster screw, nothing?

if it were your valves it would make a tapping noise i would think....its kinda hard to guess about it without listening to it in person.

ok, i guess, the best question, was what does each sound like? i've not really been in depth into motor work so yeah

Sounds like the valves you gotta get like 500 miles on it before you can get the set up good, adjust them close till the cam wears in to the rockers

if the valves are tapping it sounds just like a fast tap noise...kinda like a marble hitting concrete. or similar to a timing chain tickin when it gets loose.

good to know, it might just be the vavles then, see i had a valve job done while the head was off, and i don't believe the guy adjusted them when he put them back in? could this be the problem

If they were never adjusted than that is the sound they cant be adjust off the truck cause the head bolts go through the rockers adjust them warm intake at 8mm and exhaust at 12mm or 11mm they run a little better at 11mm exhaust

can they be adjusted cold/

yeah, you can adjust them cold, but you should re-check and re adjust them when they're warmed up .
Pinging is also a sign of the timing being WAY off causing pre-detonation.
Also, you said you set #1 at TDC and then pointed the rotor at the vaccum adv?? You are supposed to point the rotor at where the button for the #1 wire will be. You can never eyeball it perfect, so i would say re-set your distributor just to be safe, and then start it up, loosen the dist bolt and slowly play with the timing back and forth to see if you loose the ping.
OR just go to Vatozone and get a cheapie timing light.

ok, sorry i needed to clarify. I set the distributor at 12 when i was pushing it in, But when it hits the cam gear it comes close to the #1 firing spot. Just to let ya'll know it was the rockers, and a worn camshaft lobe. one of the rockers was probably .025 or .030 before i adjusted it. SO anyone know where to get a stock camshaft cheap, don't care if its used or not, just in good shape.
