i saw a first gen at itb that had a notch cut out in his frame with the bags behind the axle, what size wheel are you able to run in this setup? thanks in advance

Prolly 18s is about as big as your gonna be able to lay on. Sounds like he just had a mini notch to keep the bed from being cut.

level the frame and take a measurement from the frame to the ground (frame rails), jack your rear up to the frame (assuming the bumstops are cut off) with the wheels off, take a measurement from the center of the axle hub to the ground now subtract your first measurment from the second... that will give you a number that you need to times by 2, that will give you total tire diameter that you can run...use the tire size calculator to figure the rest

bad ass tire calculator

example:

1. frame rail to ground 6"2. rear jacked up to the frame, measurement from center of axle hub to the ground 203. 20" minus 6" = 14"4. 14" times 2 = 28"28" is the overall diameter tire size

note these are just numbers thrown in there for an example

when i first bagged my S10 in 00 i didnt want to cut into the bed due to the fact that it was a 2000 and had 8000 miles on it. but i did a step notch and it laid hard on all 4 corners with 17s (215,40,17s) i then saw the light and am now layin on 20s!

I have a 2" notch and was about a 1/2" from laying with 215/40/17's.
