my 97 started acting up a few years ago, all of a sudden it would shut off while I was driving. I couldn't figure it our i thought the fuel pump stopped or something, then I noticed everything shut off not just the fuel, well to make a long story short I figured out that the ignition switch was bad and would cut in and out. Truck would go completely dead. Ordered a new one at autozone for like 50 buck and problems went away.

Yeah, same shit happened to my dads truck. Might want to check that out too.

Hook up one of the Actron brand remote starter buttons (or any other brand...) they are a peice of test equip./ tool that Advance auto parts sells for $15 they are made so that you can diagnose a bad ignition. If you hook it up to the battery and the starter, when you press the button it will crank the engine (just like turning the key in the ignition). Basically, if the remote starter works then you know it's the ignition and not the starter and vise/versa.

BTW this is also a great inexpensive tool to have so that down the road when you might work on a timing issue you can turn the engine over while you're under the hood....
