How would I track down my first truck?

I have this crazy idea that I want to track down my first truck and somewhat restore it, but not really, because my grandfather bought the truck new and gave it to me years ago. I have the VIN# but not much else. I've tryed carfax, but that just gives you the last place it was registerred. Any help would be appreciated.

If you know what state its registered in you can go to the DMV and it costs $2(in texas) and they give you the name and address of the current owner and then you can take that info and go to white pages online and get the phone number and call them. I had to do this a few weeks ago and was successful so good luck with it.
