ok i know alot of you guys have heard of using like a brass spoon or dolly to absorb heat...well im welding in a fairly large piece(12x12) right smack i the middle of my bedside...well i had sorta a large gap on one side that was too big to sit and tack shut without putting something behind it..well im using a cheap ass hammer and dolly set..and im puttin the dolly behind the seam and layin a nice weld in the middle..joining the two pieces..well the fricken heat goes RIGHT into the dolly..i can literally put my finger on the tack seconds after i lay it and its not hot...nor is the surrounding metal...the dolly just gets warm..and the weld dont stick to the dolly...so it twists right off the back..its workin freakin awesome...

You can do the same thing with a piece of copper. The dolly could stick, if its just steel. But yeah, a piece of copper works nice. You can also use it to fill holes etc if you are trying to smooth out a stock frame or something. just clamp the copper on and weld.
