You need to use a jumper wire in the diagnostic plug jumpered across I believe the E1/TE1 connectors, don't quote me on those so check a manual to make sure those are the right terminals to jumper first, then the base timing is set like normal with a timing light. If it still is not working possibly the idle is set to fast, or the throttle position sensor is out of adjustment or not working correctly, not allowing the timing to be set to spec. Damn computerized stuff

The diagnostic plug on your 93 should be next to the fuse block under the hood on the passenger side, small little flip top box that has diagnostic printed on top, it just needs a jumper wire connected to the 2 terminals to apparently bypass the computer to set the timing, then the timing is set the conventional way with a timing light.
You could adjust the timing by ear, wouldn't have any idea where it actually was, so you would need to be cautious of the engine running hotter, pinging, detonating, so you could fine tune it as it may be too far advanced, or retarded using that method.

Use a timing lite!!

Or if you have a vaccum guage you could set your timming at the max vac you can get..
