can somebody explain what these casting numbers mean?

8-18-87 (which im guessing is the year the block was made)

4387530 318 (i know 318 is the motor size, but whats the first part?)

how much trouble is this going to be to put in my 95 dakota?

i dont know what the casting numbers mean but it shouldnt be that hard being that they put 318s in dakotas i guess it depends on you running EFI or carb carb would definetly be easier

only thing i can tell you from that casting # is it a Chrysler 318 5.2L 2 bolt main with a 2 piece rear main seal, has a cast iron crank and a roller cam and fits years 88-91...

According to my 99 dakota factory service manual

1st digit = the year [8 = 1998]2nd and 3rd digits = the month (01 thru 12)

4th and 5th digits = the engine type/fuel system/compression ratio (HX = A 2.5 liter (150 CID) 9.1:1 compression ratio engine with a multi-point fuel injection system)

6th and 7th digits = the day of engine build (01 thru 31)

Example: code *801HX23* identifies a 2.5 liter (150 CID) engine with a multi-point fuel injection system, 9.1:1 compression ratio and built on Jan 23, 1998

Whew... hope that helps bro.
