i have a 4ohm dvc 10" kicker L7 solobaric in a sealed box (.8 cu ft) with a ppi pcx-2400 delivering 800 watts rms. the voice coils are wired parallel.

i tried to wire it series yesterday and it popped real loud so i disconnected the sub. wired it back to parallel and now if i turn it up it smokes like crazy!!! WTF?! is the sub about to toast itself or what?

So smoke is never a good thing. subs often smoke when they have been blown but i dont know about it continuing to play i wouldent play them until you figure it out tho if i were you.

Take the sub out of the box and set it on the ground out side of the truck & run your wires to it. Let us know where the smoke is coming from! If it's smoking I don't know why it still plays.

it looks like it is smoking from either the brown colored area i think it's called the spider? or the leads that go from the terminal on the basket to the voice coil... anyway, it plays fine, it even sounds louder??? i don't know what the hell happened. every time i turn it up it starts to smell a little like 'burnt speaker' but it still plays.

i know smoke normally means blown..but i had a 12" solobaric that was torn all the way around the yellow rigidy looking piece and it still played fine for a while...finally went but still hit 150 db.

i wouldnt trust it. it might smell funny if its brand new. thats normal. but smoke. i wouldnt trust it. throw it away. rewiring the sub in series is only going to change what impediance the amp sees. it has nothing to do with how the sub plays. it just makes it a 2 ohm sub or an 8 ohm sub. hope its under warranty. good luck

It will affect how the sub plays. If it's wired in 2ohm the amp puts out more power if it's wired 8 ohm then the amp would put out less power. Anyways if its smoking it's about to be a trash item.
