18436572, usually number 1 is at about 5 or 4 o clock on the distributor. just be sure you are on the compression stroke when you set it you dont want to be 180 out.

whats the best way to make sure its on the compression stroke

you can put #1 anywhere as far as where the distributors(rotor) facing.

i myself as dude above mentioned, is about 4-5 oclock, or pointing at cylinder #1.

if anyone cares, small block chev and big block chev firing orders are the same.

put your finger on the spark plug hole turn the motor over by hand if it pushes your finger away thats the one you want if it sucks it in keep rotating till pushes on it.

put finger in the number one plug whole drivers side front of motor when you feel it blowing your finger out watch the harmonic balancer for the timing mark and bring it up tdc. then look at the rotor bug and it will be pointing directly at the number one plug. you may have to adjust timing to get it perfect if you are putting in a new distributor or if you just tore it all out and didnt touch the distributor and where it was set you will be at the number one plug

Would be where the rotor is pointing #1 cyl when it is on tdc and you go clockwise
