I'm wanting to rebuild my whole dash out of the stock dash. 90 Honda Civic hatchback. I want something sleek and smooth. Cut the dash gauge part out and probably the glove box. Question is...how would I fiberglass over the stock dash and fill in the parts I cut out? Going to be putting Dakota digital gauges in, probably in the middle of the dash and then getting Lambo style vents and defrost. The rest of the plastic trim around the interior will just be fiberglassed over...the only thing that I really want to reshape is the dash and probably the door panels. Would those fiberglass/epoxy mixes work? How long would it take to finish?

I will reply given my limited knowledge of fiberglass. I have researched it and watched a close friend fiberglass several things but never done it myself. In order to cover the spots on the dash that you would want to fill I woould think that you would have to cover the dash in fleece or felt or some other material that you would use when fiberglassing a speaker box. You would then paint on your fiberglass resin right onto the fleece which will harden and effectively shave those parts such as the glovebox. Doing a dash will be a lot of work but if you take your time it shouldnt be too difficult to do and should turn out great. I want to do something like this when I get my first mini but will be making a whole new dash and not fiberglassing over the existing one. I have the design in my head... just no mini yet. I am sure someone with more experience will chime in. Just make sure you do your research and it will turn out good. Also make sure and post up pics when it is finished.

Well I have the slightest idea of how to even start to make one from scratch. I think I could fiberglass over it and it will turn out fine. Doing resin, would I have to use fiberglass cloths or would it just be resin and gel coat? Also, what exactly is shaving...I see it all over the place, but no really too sure. I guess it's to get a smooth look...like no door handles, etc. etc?

hey, im guessing since its a civic the dash is just hard plastic wraped in somethin like my accord is, what your gunna want to do is rip everything off the dash down the the hard plastic frame and clean that up real nice with some soap and water then once its dry you want to stretch fleece over the parts you want covered then lay at least 2 layers of fibergla**, sand it all smooth and bondo over it all and sand some more til smooth, adding bondo and sanding it as much as needed til perfect. you can check out www.glassmanscustomforum.com for more info and pictures to help you.
