when i taught myself to weld basically, i fukd the tailgate all to hell and its not worth doin any body work on it, so im thinking about a full skin, should i leave the tail gate on and weld a skin over it, or just weld a cross brace inbetween the bed sides and lay a skin over that? and how should i run the wires for the brake lights and such if i mounted some LEDs in it also? just have a section cut out and bolt a piece of sheet metal over or what?

it is not possible to lay a skin over your tailgate. the skin would not fit and would stick out and not line up. weld cross braces in and then weld in your skin. take your time it should take you a few hours to weld one up if you go to fast you will warp the whole thing. good luck

yes brace it. my buddies was put on w/ the old tail gate innards(not the sheetmetal) and it looks factory inside but has started to crack like all skins do lol.

My brother's hardbody has the stock inner part also and looks good, but its not molded to the truck.. just the tailgate skin itself with the bodyline.

I WANNA SHAVE MINE BUT I WANNA KEEP THE FACTORY INDENTATION THATS ON MY TAILGATE. IS IT WISE TO WELD THE TAILGATE IN THERE INSTEAD OF A SKIN?

I wanna do the same thing.. but more plans with a tag box that uses the angle of the indention as a bodyline around the box.. hard to explain but i love the yota "indention" lol
