I am going to be painting my car in a small garage. I was just wondering if when I was painting if I ran a high powered shop vac if it would suck up some of the fumes and reduce smell?

if you have windows in it..put box fans in them..one pushin one pulling..etc..

the vac well do nothing for you. you need to push the air up. if you do have windows use the fans but put them both blowing out not in. if they are blowing they with kick up dust and other shit that way land on your paint and and you will spend a lot of time sanding out all the fish eyes that you will have.
good luck

if you put a fan blowing out of the window put a couple furnace filters over it so you don't hose down your neighbors car with overspray. also an important thing to remember is you need as much air able to enter as quickly as it exits. i learned this the hardway when i built my paintbooth. the fan creates negative pressure and draws air from where ever it can so any little spot where air can get through(the ceiling in my case)brings all the dust out of the cracks with it. don't forget to clean the hell out of the place too, i used a shop vac on the floors and walls and swept the ceiling, every little effort in a situation like that helps alittle more.

What happens if I don't have any windows? I don't really want to leave my garage door open when I paint either. I live in a town home complex and I do not want anyone knowing what I am doing. Any suggestions would be great. And I'm not looking for answers like "Don't do it" or "Rent a spray booth." Thanks

im afraid no windows and want to keep the doors closed..then "dont do it" or "rent a booth" are you only answers

DONT USE THE FANS PULLING AIR OUT, only blowing in....unless you get explosion proof fans, which are like 300 bucks a piece.....paint fumes are highly explosive....which brings me to my next point....you live in a townhome complex??????RENT A BOOTH, have you ever driven near a bodyshop, chances are you can smell paint there....and they have the best vbentilation and filtration sytems around, your neighbors, all of them are going to smell it, and if you burn the place down, your insurance wont cover it......just rent a booth and be done with it...booths are like 100 bucks a day to rent.

Yea, I worked at a bodyshop for a year. I am going to try to get in with them again and see if I can't take advantage of some of their amenities (sp.). Thanks for your insight.

I painted a honda (see profile) in a small garage, it was fumey as hell, there was no windows, I had the garage door 1/2 open and a little fan pushing the fumes out it turned out alright. I also painted a buddies van (greendream's) outside in the grass and you could not even notice the fumes, painted turned out relatively clean actually but there was like NO wind at all, and it was only primer. I prefer to paint in the booth at work tho, but maybe thats me. I will however be doing a lot more painting in my small garages cause its always open for use.

I've never even thought about "explosion proof" fans! It's a good thought, but I've never heard of one igniting the fumes... I've always used (past 15 years) a squirrel cage type fan from a furnace that blows out the side/back of the garage and left the garage door up an inch to let air in. Wetting down the floor seems to help with dust coming in, or just do it on a rainy day if possible! Your neighbors WILL smell it though, no way around that at all.
