the early 2.0 has manually adjusted valve lash, the 2.2 is hydraulically adjusted. The heads are interchangable.

It was more a year difference than a motor size difference, because the japanese market 2.0 has hydraulics. You can put the manual adjusters on a 2.2 head, in fact you will need to if you run most aftermarket cams.

Sweet thanks Russ you the man...So the 2.0 head would be better to run if i plan on puttin in a cam anytime soon?

either head will work the same, you'll just need the manual adjusters from a 2.0.

I have a whole parts long bed B2000 I need to pick up from where its resting, it had a bad cam (snapped) and has 2.0 adjustable rockers in the front seat next a set of 2.2 replacement rockers.

Okay so its not like the 2.2 has bigger valves or anything? It won't give me any more compression or anything? I'm jus wondering cuz i gotta rebuild my head(big surprise being a mazda huh?!) and i was jus gonna get one from a yard here, have it rebuilt, and swap it with mine so i was wondering if a 2.2 head would help any but it sounds like their exact except the rockers, correct?

Oh hey and Russ, would it be dumb to deck the head a lil for more compression without doin anything to the bottom end?

???

Your not going to gain all that much with decking the head. Personally I'd say it's a waist of time but whatever floats your boat. If your looking for power out of a Mazda maybe think TURBO.. Lots more fun...Or just throw a bottle on it and see how long it'll last. LOL

hahahahahaDude thats great...yea i figured decking wouldnt do much for mebut i thought i'd ask!...no, def won't float my boat! Thanks for the info tho...So i've heard tons of people say "probe this, probe that; 626 this, 626 that"But has anyone actually done a turbo on a "stock" mazda engine? And had a good turnout??Jus tryin to figure out what to do...Thanks guys

shaving the head retards the cam timing. If you want to raise compression buy custom pistons or have some made.

But seriously, modding a Mazda to be fast is kind of self defeating. Get a weber, get rid of the restictive exhaust, and you wont get left behind at stoplights any longer.

The only way I would turbo a mazda is a motor swap. Turboing the higher compression NA motor is asking for detonation, and you'd really want EFI to make it work anyway. A lower compression motor will allow higher boost pressures and less timing retard and therefore make more (and also more reliable) horsepower.
