i agree w/ 95% of what u said.
from my own personal experience, the tutorials were a great gateway to learning PS. i started using PS and ILL in late 2004, i had no previous experience at all. currently, i dont use any of the techniques that the tutorials have tought me. you'll find that using the tutorials help you understand the tools a little in the begining and then you'll begin to master your own unique techinique.
if you've never touched PS before, try out the tutorials and see how it goes.
remember, its all about managing your LAYERS. like dougy said, 100-200 layers sometimes. my wheels alone are usually 10-12 layers.
don't get me wrong, i agree tutorials are a good gateway to get you started. It gets you familiar with the tools and how they work. but i also try to steer people away from using them too much because they tend to rely on them TOO much. they don't take into consideration of what they are actually doing, which is teaching you. not doing it for u. Some people if they get stumped on how to do something, they go look for a tutorial. Which if they had just paid attention to the first 30 tutorials that they just read and went though they would have realized all the info and training they need'd was right there.
But like i said, it's all about learning photoshop (THE PROGRAM) first, and then applying it towards what your wanting to achive... it all comes in time, so please don't plan on knowing how everything in the first day. thats why the program costs $600, because there is a LOT of shit to use and learn. not saying that you'll ever use ALL of it. hell, i know there is a lot of stuff that i don't use nor even care to use in photoshop just because it doesn't apply to what i do... but it's still there and has a purpose
