the float could be sticking on the carb pull the plugs and see if they are wet. if so you have a float or needle valve problem in the carb. i can tell you though i would say the diaphram is no good anymore if it has gas in it.

Jeff, you mean the diaphram on the distributor? I figured that gas couldnt be good for it. When I pull the vac advance line off gas leaks from the line, and sputters back out of the diaphram. I'll say this, the first time I tried to crank the motor it was firing. I had been up for 30+ hours so I left it and went to bed. Next time I tried is when problems started. Im getting spark from the coil now but no spark at the plug wires. Would a bad diaphram keep the dist from firing? I pulled a plug and yes it was a little wet. It smelled a little like gas as well. Is this a float or needle problem?

I need some help in case I need to order some new parts for the carb.

oh crap, where to start.

Ok there is the battery thing, its been charged, has it been checked with a load tester? I've seen new batteries "check good" but when you put them on a load tester they fail.

There are 2 engine grounds, one goes from the battery to the inner fender then over to the back of the tranny. The other one goes from the firewall to the cylinder head. Try taking off all battery contacts and all the ground contacts you can reach, clean them, and reinstall.

The diaphram on the distributor is the vacuum advance, if it is bad or non functional it may run like crap but will still run. The distributor has a centrifugal advance and vacuum advance the centrifugal will still operate without it but you would be a little low on power. It is possable that fuel made it past the diaphram on the vac advance and made its way into the distributor. Take the cap off and inspect it, if it looks like crap get one with brass terminals from NAPA. Check the rotor button and replace it if need be. Pop off the cover underneath the rotor button and make sure there is no fuel down there and that there is no condensation on the magnetic pickup. Make sure the magnetic pickup wires are connected and not hard or cracked.

If you could get the truck running I would recommend load testing the starter but thats kind of hard without being able to start it to get it to a store or shop.

Double check your entire ignition system and timing, I've found bugs in that even though I've set it up 100 times. Here is a good page on it:

If the wires are old replace them.

The diaphram should be fuel resistant as most things in the engine compartment are but none the less not good for it.

Could also be your muffler bearing not rotating causing your Cats to plug. :-P

Thanks Ken, but I got her fingered out a couple days ago. It was the carb.
